about

Better Out Than In – Solo album by Dilip Parekh

Nick Drake, W. B. Yeats, Herbert Hoover, and an Indian -Irish songwriter from Fremantle, Western Australia; could there be a connection ? Yes indeed, for Dilip Parekh, one of Western Australia’s finest songwriters has combined these ingredients in his beautiful new solo album ‘Better Out Than In’.

Parekh is more well known in local circles as the frontman for one of WA’s busiest and most popular party bands – Dilip ‘n the Davs. In this solo acoustic work though, there is a focus on more reflective material. Piano, strings and acoustic guitar dominate throughout and serve to bring an emotional intensity to the album.

Themes of parenting, guidance for friends, and love lost and found run through all the eleven tracks on the album. There are also poems by WB Yeats and Herbert Hoover that have been set to music. The album finale is Nick Drake’s ‘Northern Sky’ where Dilip pays homage to one of his favourite songwriters. Two of the songs were co-written with his close friend, Bali based lyricist Brian Bell. Wistful, deep and melodic; these are accessible songs with universal resonance.

Ranging from bouncy jump jazz, through folk and country rock, with some poem recitation over musical accompaniment, there are a myriad of music styles on the album, but the features that bind them together are the strength, clarity and beauty of the songs. This is an album to make you feel emotions deeply.

Parekh has done well to assemble some of the very best talented musicians from the vibrant Fremantle music scene into Jason Hayle’s Lonewolf Studio where he had also recorded his band’s album earlier in the year.

Song Titles &Description:
1. Blue Dress 4:22. A lusty jump jazz tune featuring Alex Dew on guitar and Sky Eaton on trumpet.

2. Golden Boy 4:56. Brian Bell’s poignant lyrics about his child growing up. With beautiful string arrangement and performances by Phoebe Corke.

5. The Cloths of Heaven 2:06. W B Yeats love poem set to music with just voice and acoustic guitar

7. Its Alright 4:02. A punchy song for a friend offering counsel.

8. Goldfields Love Poem 2:58. Hoovers famous bush poem for a Kalgoorlie barmaid set to music.

9. Your Little Girl 3:47. A song from the “She’s Leaving Home” genre
